What happens after you report a crime?

What to expect after making a crime report to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.

Assessing your report

We first check the information you have given us, whether HIOWC is the right police force to deal with the report and whether anyone needs an immediate safeguarding or policing response.

We then assess what investigation or other action is appropriate. The information in every report also helps us understand crime, harm and demand in our communities.

If an investigation is opened

Where the report is allocated for investigation, the police record identifies the officer or team responsible. They may contact you for more information, statements or evidence and will explain the next steps that apply to your case.

Giving us new information

If you have new information or evidence about an existing report, use the existing-case service and include your police reference.
