How to complain about the police

You can make a complaint directly to HIOWC or through the relevant independent complaints arrangements. Tell us what happened, who was involved and how you were affected. Where you act on behalf of another person, we may need evidence of their consent or authority.

To complain directly to us you can

Include relevant names, dates, locations, reference numbers and the outcome you would like us to consider. If you do not know a detail, do not guess.

Complain about data protection

Explain which information you believe was handled incorrectly, the dates involved and any reply you have received. The relevant information rights and police complaints routes are distinct.

Complain about the Chief Constable

Complaints concerning the Chief Constable must be referred to the competent independent oversight authority rather than handled as an ordinary staff complaint.

Complaining about a colleague when you work for the police

Members of police personnel should use applicable internal conduct, whistleblowing or employment arrangements, as appropriate. Professional Standards can direct staff to the correct procedure.

If you need help to make a complaint

Tell us about any disability, translation, communication or accessibility assistance you need. We can consider how best to help you explain the issues.
